Greg Humphries

Greg Humphries is an artist based in Cornwall interested in exploring the boundary between inner and outer landscapes; the space where Self meets Other. Often arising from automatic and subconscious mark making techniques his work hovers on the edge of figuration and abstraction, the recognised and unrecognisable. In this way the viewer sees hints or clues to what is being communicated to them through the image, enough to interpret the work for themselves but not enough to dismiss it as being fully understood.

“As an artist with a love of Nature and a concern for environmental issues it seemed to me that all the scientific conversations were human talking to human about how to affect change which would save ourselves. I wanted to ask Nature herself if she had anything to communicate to us in order to inform this debate.

My current work is the result of that communication. After using various techniques to place me in an open receptive state, paint en plein air at various locations using automatic techniques outlined by Ithell Colquhoun in the essay ‘The Children of the Mantic Stain’. The paintings which result I leave the viewer to interpret for themselves, in the hope that the audience may glean something of what Nature is trying to say”. Greg Humphries 2025
